Camaro Rental and Other Cool Cars You Can Rent   by Tony Carpentiere

I’ve rented quite a few cars and have come to expect certain things from most rental cars. I do expect the car to be clean and get me to my destination in relative comfort. I don’t expect an eye-opening driving experience. It’s not that I’m unhappy with your average car rental, I just don’t normally put fun-to-drive and car rental in the same sentence. Fortunately this status quo changed when I learned that rental companies such as Avis and Budget now rent cars that you’d want to drive such as the Chevy Camaro.

Rental car companies have real performance cars

Sure rental car companies have offered sportier cars such as the Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger but these rentals usually feeling like entry-level versions of the model. By adding higher-end cars to their fleet rental car companies have definitely introduced fun-to-drive to renting a car. These higher-end cars include the Nissan 350Z, Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro to name a few. Avis groups their special cars under Avis Cool Cars, Budget refers to them as the Budget Street Fleet and Hertz has the Fun Collection.

Two things to keep in mind if you decide to rent one of these premium cars; first they will cost more to rent than your average rental car and they are usually available in limited numbers. So don’t expect to be able to walk up to the rental counter and rent a Chevy Corvette. The good news is these cars are usually available in areas where they are most popular. So with a little planning you should be able to find the car you want. For me it was renting the updated Camaro.

How to find and rent a cool car

I’ve been interested in the updated Camaro since I first saw the car in 2009. I started my search with the car guides of several rental car sites. I narrowed my choice to Avis Cool Cars and Budget Street Fleet since both have the V6 (Camaro LT) and V8 versions (Camaro SS) of the Camaro. The Camaro models were available at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which matched my upcoming travel plans, so I booked the Camaro SS.

Once I got on the road with the Camaro I quickly discovered my rental was not a stripped-down version of this car. The Camaro rental completely lived up to the hype. Renting this performance car did come with a premium rate that I felt was offset by an exceptional driving experience. If you plan to rent a Camaro or other performance car remember to book early because cars are limited and they are definitely in demand.
